Visa

Do I need to obtain a visit to visit Thailand?

Thailand allows citizens of 93 countries, including China and India, to visit the country without a visa (or can apply for a visa on arrival). See the full list here.

I heard that Thailand will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Do I need to apply for it?

The Thai government announced in August 2024 that they will launch a pilot ETA project in December 2024. However, there has been no update about this since. So, the current status is ETA is not required to visit Thailand. The office information source about Thai ETA is https://www.thaievisa.go.th/.

Credit Card and Cash

Can I use my credit cards in Thailand?

Most established restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls accept credit cards. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. American Express, Discover, JCB, and Union Pay are less popular.

Do I need to carry cash in Thailand?

It would help if you still had cash in certain situations (e.g., buying street food or taking a traditional taxi). You can find many currency exchange counters on the arrival floor of the BKK airport.

Am I expected to tip in Thailand?

Tipping is mostly not expected in Thailand. Exceptions are massage parlors, bell boys, and guided tours.

Local Transportation

How bad is traffic is Bangkok?

Bangkok traffic is highly unpredictable, especially in the morning (7-9am) and evening (5-7pm). Trip time estimation by Google map can be highly inaccurate during these times.

How bad is traditional taxis in Bangkok?

Traditional taxis in Bangkok are well-known to be scammy for tourists. Many will try not to use the meter and ask for a lump sum payment (which will mostly be 100%+ of the meter fare). Most traditional taxis in Thailand only accept cash.

How about ride-sharing apps?

Ride-sharing apps are highly recommended for tourists. The most common apps are Grab and Bolt. Pay attention to the selected payment method since both apps accept both credit cards and cash. 

What are the train systems in Bangkok?

Bangkok has two major train services, the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), commonly known as Skytrain and the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT), commonly known as Subway. BTS accepts cash and Thai credit cards. MRT accepts cash and international credit cards. These two systems are separately operated so there is no transfer between the two systems. There is also another train system that serves the BKK airport, called Airport Rail Link. It only accepts cash.

Food

Can I drink tap water in Bangkok?

Tap water in Bangkok is safe theoretically. Many Thai people prefer not to drink it.

Should I be concerned about my food allergies?

The concept of food allergies did not exist in Thailand until recently. Therefore, if you have food allergies, make sure to explicitly tell the vendor/server about them. If you have severe food allergies, it is highly recommended that you avoid street food and only eat at well-established restaurants or hotels.

Can I find vegetarian/vegan food in Bangkok?

The concept of vegetarian/vegan also did not exist in Thailand until recently. Right now, there are many vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Bangkok. However, if you visit a restaurant that also serves non-vegetarian/non-vegan menus, cross-contamination is possible.

Crime and Safety

How safe is Bangkok?

Bangkok is a very safe city. Violent crime is extremely rare. However, small-level theft and pickpockets are common in crowded areas.
